Jennifer Ivory, a self-described “bug enthusiast,” creates highly realistic individual insect sculptures using a host of materials – illustration ink, watercolor, acrylic, heavy coated art papers, transparency film, and feathers, among other media. Viewers often think her paper insects are real, so she exhibits them with the somewhat humorous disclaimer, “No insects were harmed in the making of this artwork. (They’re Not Real!)”
Each of Ivory’s paper insects is, however, based on a real insect. Ivory strives for accurate detail and color, but “for fun” often makes her insects much larger or smaller then they might be in real life, taking a day to many months to finish each piece.

Artist’s Statement:
There is something intriguing and sublime about the world of insects…their industry and adaptability, their often stunning appearance. I have found that if I take time to look closely, there is an amazing breadth of beauty and astonishing capability waiting to be admired.
I have been exhibiting my artwork for 11 years and the response has been wonderful. I really enjoy hearing the surprise in people’s voices and seeing the smiles on their faces when they first see my bugs. Often memories are triggered and a story ensues!
My artwork makes it easy for people to appreciate insects and, once they’re intrigued, a world of possibility opens up. The thousands of conversations I’ve had with art patrons about habitat sustainability, pesticides, green gardening and humanity’s dependence upon insects has given me a sense of optimism. People do care and positive change is happening – one backyard at a time.
For my part, I sincerely hope my artwork inspires people to pause for a moment every now and then and smile in wonder at a dragonfly or a beetle or, say, a spectacular spider web. They’re truly worth “Seeing!”
